C.T. Studd

The Cambridge Seven and China

In 1885, C.T. Studd joined a group of young men from Cambridge University who volunteered to serve in China. They became known as the “Cambridge Seven.”

Their decision shocked British society. These were educated, respected young men giving up comfortable lives.

They joined the China Inland Mission, founded by Hudson Taylor. Like Taylor, Studd adopted Chinese clothing and lived among the people.

Life in China was difficult. There were language barriers, cultural differences, and periods of unrest. But Studd believed strongly in sharing the Christian message wherever he went.

During his time in China, he married Priscilla Stewart, who also shared his missionary calling.

After several years, health concerns forced him to return to England — but he was not finished with missionary work.
