Brown Eyes and a Lasting Legacy

Amy once explained why she was thankful for her brown eyes.

In India, she sometimes darkened her skin with coffee and dressed in Indian clothing to safely rescue children. Her dark eyes helped her blend in.

The prayer God did not answer when she was a child became part of the reason she could help others.

Amy Carmichael never married and never returned permanently to Ireland. She lived in India for more than 50 years.

She died on January 18, 1951, and was buried in Dohnavur. Instead of a tall monument, a simple birdbath marks her grave — a quiet reminder of a life poured out in service.

Today, the Dohnavur Fellowship still operates.

Amy once wrote,
“You can give without loving. But you cannot love without giving.”

And she lived exactly that way.
